The surname Abbey means 'Worker at an Abbey'. As monasteries were huge institutions, working large areas of land and administering many people, many more people were employed by them than just the monks and those in holy orders. Forms of the name are first recorded in the twelfth and thirteen centuries.
The similar Scottish surname 'Abbie' and its variants comes from the practice of certain monastries having lay-Abbots - essentially secular managers, who were not sworn to celibacy and so could have children.
This crest is taken from Abbey as recorded in Fairbairn's Book of Crests, an Eagle's Head with the motto 'Spei Mea Coelo', meaning 'My Hope is in Heaven'.
