Handfasting is an ancient Celtic marriage tradition symbolising the binding of two lives. During the ceremony, a couple’s hands are tied together with a ribbon or cord to represent unity and commitment. Historically, it marked a betrothal, but today, it is often included in weddings as a spiritual or symbolic gesture, honouring heritage and the joining of hearts and hands. The ritual embodies partnership, equality, and the promise to walk life’s path together, making it a meaningful addition to both religious and secular ceremonies.
 
Our handfasting ribbons are made with 1.4 to 1.5m of tartan (depending on the width of the cloth) and about 6cm wide.
